An interview with DinoMarket Crested Gecko Breeders from Korea

Q)First of all, I want to ask you about your experience breeding crested geckos. How long have you been breeding and what got you into it? 

A) Our shop, Dinomarket, is a crested gecko specialty store created 5 years ago by Sanha—who has been actively exchanging with overseas markets for 7–8 years, as some of you might know—and Young Su Kim, who loves meeting customers. Starting out of a shared love for animals and becoming friends, we decided to work together by dividing our roles into breeding and adoption (sales), and we currently operate 3 franchise stores in Korea.

Q) What was your breeding process like when you decided to focus on your mosaic line of crested geckos? Did you do line breeding or more selective breeding? Do you have any pictures of the first mosaic? 

A)You might not remember why we named it the "Mosaic" line, but 5–6 years ago, the "(white) spot type" and "(snow)flake type" were perceived only as difficult and hard to work with. However, we felt that those difficult traits and forms were extremely beautiful, and since not many people specialized in those types back then, we thought it had a competitive edge. Our dream for spots initially began with Michel and Talmud. We upgrade our traits every 2 years: traits in the 1st year, coloration in the 3rd year, and now a thick, chunky feel.

Q)Why did you choose the name Mosaic ? Can you describe what makes a mosaic crested gecko? 

A) The snowflake patterns of the "spot type" and "flake" sometimes look like a mosaic, and biologically, the word "mosaic" means "having two or more traits." There are many different perspectives on quality in crested geckos—such as pinstripes, structure, whitewall, quad, and others. We named it this way with the hope that our "Mosaic line" would become an essential course of traits for taking aesthetically typical "high-quality" geckos up to the next level of quality. Our goal is not to provide a finished masterpiece gecko, but rather to let you create your own "completed normal" that possesses unique individuality right in your hands, bringing you joy.

Q)What morphs have you bred mosaic crested geckos to and what morphs have you not bred them to yet? What lineages make up the mosaic crested geckos? 

A) SPT is a "golden-colored crested gecko" that came over from China.

A) When we were first breeding the Mosaic line, what we needed most was "coloration." Back then, white, yellow, and tangerine colors were mainstream for crested geckos, but we wanted to infuse something special into our Mosaic line. The key to that was "SPT" (Super Tri) imported from China. SPT is being test-bred with various morphs such as Sable, Cappuccino, Axanthic, and Chocho.

Q) What has been your favorite morph combination to breed the Mosaic crested geckos with?

Naturally, the very first thing we did was the work of coating our "Mosaic traits" with gold, and our representative individual named [Prime] is the result of being able to create golden crested geckos featuring the various traits mentioned above.

My favorite thing when breeding SPT is combining it with the Sable and Mosaic lines. Broadly speaking, het axanthic could also be a possibility, and we will share the results once they come out.

When the golden sheen enters a Sable, it turns out in red. Also, when bred with existing normals, it shows a different kind of pure white.

While we cannot definitively say that SPT is prettier than other geckos, we are confident that once you breed them, it is a new color line where you will definitely feel, "Ah, this is a different vibe of gecko."
